• Corinth Canal -  Monastery Mega Spileo - Kalavryta - Monastery Agia Lavra --(Cave Lakes)
Our tour starts from our meeting point, and heads towards the historical district of Kalavryta, Peloponnese.
After we travel for the first 80 kilometers, having on our left the Saronic Gulf, we make our first stop at the Corinth Canal (20 minutes). We continue our journey, and after an hour and twenty minutes, we arrive at the Monastery of Mega Spileo, one of the most important holy places of Orthodoxy. The monastery is built into the natural opening of a cave of Mount Chelmos, at an altitude of about 1000 meters.
Rich in history, the monastery was built in 362 by two brothers and monks, Symeon and Theodore. The holy icon of Virgin Mary, made of mastic gum and wax, was found there. The icon is preserved intact, despite the fact that the monastery has been burned by fire four times. Inside the monastery, a museum exists with interesting exhibits: manuscripts, precious golden crosses, crosses from Holy Rood, banners, portraits, engravings and many volumes of books. In a nearby chapel, holy bones, as well as the skulls of the founders of the monastery are kept.
In the Greek revolution of 1821, the monastery played an important role. In December 1943, the Nazis executed 16 monks and burned the cells. After the war, a new monastery was erected.
With a feeling of awe, we leave the monastery, and after a while, we arrive at Kalavryta, where we will dine at a traditional village restaurant. We continue our tour and visit the monastery of Agia Lavra, which has a historic importance for the Greek revolution of 1821 against the Turks, as it was the place where the Bishop Germanos III of Old Patras raised the historic banner of the revolution. After this visit, we take the way back, knowing that we have visited two of the most important monasteries of Greek Orthodoxy.
It is possible to expand our tour, in order to visit the legendary Cave Of The Lakes, located 36 km away (remarkable for its stalactites and stalagmites), as well as visit the memorial of the people executed by the Nazis in 1943.
