Pelion - Volos & Thermopylae 3 Day tour
Explore the verdant mountain of Pelion, the homeland of Centaurus according to the myths. Visit numerous of its picturesque traditional villages, admire the local architecture, the centuries - old plane trees, experience the traditional local food and take the chance to taste the Greek drink Tsipouro. Wander by the hot springs at Thermopylae and walk about the battlefield where King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans fought the immense Persian army.
Description
Day 1
Michael’s Amazing Tours will pick you up from your accommodation early in the morning and we will drive North towards the mount Pelion, Centaur’s homeland. We will make our first stop at Thermopylae where you will witness the hot springs of Thermopylae, the battlefield of Thermopylae where King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans fought the huge Persian army. You will also admire the Statue of King Leonidas.
We will continue our alternative tour driving towards the city of Volos where we will stop for lunch .You will have the opportunity to walk the sea side pedestrian footpath by the port with the numerous restaurants . We call these restaurants ‘Tsipouradika’. Take the chance to taste the traditional drink Tsipouro very similar to Ouzo, and the traditional dishes.
After your lunch we will drive uphill towards the mountain Pelion and specifically the village Portaria which is surrounded by dense vegetation of plane trees and oaks. Reaching Portaria we will check in at our hotel.
You will have plenty of time to walk this admirable picturesque village and the Centaur’s path before you enjoy your dinner and experience the local dishes.
Day 2
The second day of our alternative 3 - day tour we will visit plenty of traditional picturesque villages of Pelion Mountain by making a big circle. We will drive through heavenly forests beside small waterfalls, and we will stop several times to capture the outstanding scenery of these admirable landscapes.
If it happens to be there on Saturday or Sunday, you will have the opportunity to take a wonderful train ride from Ano Lechonia to Milies. The train is named Moutzouris and runs only these two days. If you take the train you will meet your driver at Milies . If our second day is not Saturday or Sunday, we will continue the tour from Ano Lehonia to Milies village by our vehicle. After Milies we will stop at Vizitsa village, then the Pinakates village and you will have lunch at Tsagarada village where you will also visit the church of Agia Paraskevi and you will admire the centuries - old plane tree (may be 1000 years old) at the same square.
Not far away from Tsagarada is the Damouchari seaside village where where the famous movie ‘Mamma Mia’ was filmed.
Continuing our tour, we will drive to the highest spot, the village of Chania where a ski center is located and during the winter this ski resort is full of action.
At the end of this day we will drive back to Portaria for our second overnight.
Day 3
Starting from Portaria village your driver will take you to another picturesque traditional village, the Makrinitsa village, where you will hike the narrow pedestrian stone alleys. You can stay for a coffee or a juice at the square of the same village sitting under the shadow of the huge plane trees enjoying the sound of the water running from several spots, and also admiring the view of the Pagasetic gulf .You can visit the small but nice Byzantine museum, the Old church of Saint John the Baptist, and you will definitely be fascinated by the local architecture !!
Leaving behind us the mount Pelion we will continue towards Athens, and we will stop at the seaside village of Kammena Vourla for a nice lunch by the seaside. You can also enjoy an ice- cream while walking by the seaside before we take the way back to Athens to conclude our alternative 3 - day tour.
